Steel Magnolias by Robert Harling was performed by the Gretna Little Theatre in June. The play, directed by Madalyn Martin, received so many positive reviews that they were asked to perform the play again for a larger audience at the Harvester Performance Center.
Steel Magnolias was originally presented at the WPA Theatre in New York City on March 22, 1987. The play was so well received that it was adapted into a movie on November 5, 1989. The movie is celebrating its thirtieth year and had the outstanding cast of Sally Field, Julia Roberts, Dolly Parton, Daryl Hannah, Olympia Dukakis and Shirley Maclaine.
M'Lynn(Madalyn Martin) is the mother of bride-to-be Shelby Eatenton(Becca Davila), and as friend Truvy Jones(Sandi Meadows) fixes the women's hair for the ceremony, they welcome a helping hand from aspiring beautician Annelle Dupuy Desoto(Leanna Hiatt). Diabetic Shelby has a health scare, which is averted but doesn't bode well for her hopes of having children. The city’s curmudgeon, Quiser(Brenda Strickland); and the town’s former first lady, Clairee(Donna Proctor) are the warm Southern belles who know how to survive life’s challenges with their unwavering friendship. Time passes, and all of the women and their friends encounter tragedy and good fortune, growing stronger and closer in the process.
